Giller list coverage

The lit world is abuzz with chatter of the Giller Shortlist, which is probably the healthiest vindication of a major award to come along in decades. It’s chockablock with exciting, dangerous, and unusual writing, it’s varied in form and spreads the recognition around like butter pushed out to the crusty edges of the publishing-sandwich’s seedy bread. I mean, the list even made Steven Beattie squee with delight. I’ve never even seen him smile.

  1. Nathan says:

I’ve seen Beattie smile. The puppy he was kicking at the time seemed less than pleased, but Beattie? He was having the time of his life.

  2. Robert J. Wiersema says:

Yeah, I’ve seen Beattie smile too. Well, maybe. I was pretty hammered at the time.

  3. Michael says:

The Globe and Mail link goes to the National Post article. Sorry to be so picky, please feel free to delete my comment after fixing.

  4. George says:

    Fixed, Michael, thanks.

  5. Lh says:

I’m not sure there’s anything dangerous on that list… i agree it’s refreshing, yes. But dangerous? Unusual?

  6. George says:

    Read Annabel.

  7. ol B+ says:

Light Lifting is fantastic. Except the second story. Which is okay.

Question: How come no one is saying anything about the Winter kids being nominated for the WTA and judge Lisa Moore being a acknowledged time and time again in M. Winter’s novels?

  8. Andrew S says:

The second story? It’s perhaps the best of the lot.

  9. ol B+ says:

    No its not.

“Miracle Mile”, “Light Lifting”, “The Loop” etc. All better. Way better.

  10. Nicole says:

I gotta say, how wonderful that around the same time CBC is telling Canadians not to read short fiction (and poetry) the Giller shortlist has two story collections on it. Hahaha. Canada WILL read short fiction!!
