American Right upset about something

This time it has something to do with Obama. Hard to believe them turning on him like that. Apparently someone took a photograph of bookshelves in the White House and it’s revealed a grand Communist conspiracy. I KNEW IT! I also heard somewhere that he was black. Pass it on. Vive la revolucion! Oh, wait. Can we use that?

The conservative blogosphere is having a collective climax today because a blogger from sayanything.com snapped a photo of some old reference books about socialism in the White House Library — which the tour guide said was stocked by Michelle Obama. Surely this means that every time President Obama is in the midst of important policy deliberations, he goes into the library, dusts off The American Socialist Movement, 1897-1912, and uses it to help him figure out what the most socialist policy would be.

The L.A. Times Jacket Copy has a follow up by Carolyn Kellogg, that while not as funny as the conservatives’ comments, is much more interesting.

Seems the books were chosen by Yale’s librarian James T. Babb for Jacqueline Kennedy in 1963. Kellogg goes into why the books were chosen and why that is important.

But the thought of Ronald Reagan reading a book about socialism or George W. Bush learning the lessons of Malcolm X makes me proud or giggle.

  2. Pete says:

But would a genuine socialist really need to use a reference book?

  3. miette says:

It’s killing me, looking at this submit box and not making the joke about a conservative “collective climax” and “teabagging.” I mean, it’s NUTS.

  4. Roland says:

What do they do with their dust jackets, just chuck ‘em?

Surely the Obamas can expect to hear from the graphic design community on this.

  5. Dwight Williams says:

Have these guys never heard of the rule that says “Know your enemy, know yourself and you need not fear the result of a hundred battles”?

If the guy in the Oval Office today understands that rule, then it’s no wonder he’s got the opposition’s stuff in plain view on his bookshelves. He’s avoiding the practice of willful idiocy.

  6. DGM says:

The Republicans in the States (and Conservatives in Canada, to a small but growing extent), seem to mistake contrarianism for genuine political dialogue. If someone on the dreaded Left said that gravity was a law of nature, someone on the Right is bound to shout out that gravity is a socialist plot to limit taxpayers’ freedom to fly at will. STOP TAKING AWAY OUR FREEDOMS BRACK HOOSAIN NOBAMA 911 NEVAR FORGET!!!

  7. Honestly says:

For those that think the Obama’s are just using social books as strictly recreational or to “know the enemy” do not know much about their background. They want to restructure this country from the inside out. Us black folks have worked too hard to get where we have to be told once again what we can and cannot do. We need to take notice of how much time Obama spends visiting and entertaining other countries diplomats. He seems to visit everywhere but the places that supported him – the black communities. He seems more concerned about helping ourt wallstreet and big banks than the brother that needs help on the streets.

He seems to be more concerned about the Mexican vote than he does our vote.
