I noticed the cheap Stephen King at amazon.com $9!! Now that I know what is going on I will not be buying it there!
I tend to buy the new best sellers at Costco and less mainstream stuff at the local book shop, spread the wealth around a bit.

As far as I can tell this can only happen if the publishers are giving these big companies big discounts on the normal wholesale price. Otherwise, why don’t the publishers order their own books from Walmart for $9? Since the wholesale price is app. 17.50 for a hardcover, they would make 8 dollars on every book they ordered. Sure most of that 8 dollars is eaten up by production costs, but even if they’re only making 10 cents a book at Walmart’s expense, bring it on.
