I’ve just asked on LargeHearted Boy’s own site, but I’ll ask here, too:

what makes those concert bootlegs legal for download?

  2. david says:

The mp3s I post are all provided by artists/publicists/labels and cleared for posting.

The bittorrent links to concerts are distributed by two websites who respect intellectual property (etree.org and dimeadozen.org), and remove any offending content immediately.

    David,

Thanks for the reply, and the email replies you sent me. I’d like to point out here that, in fact, those sites do not respect intellectual property. In general, copyright law states that the creator has the right to reproduce their own work and others must apply for permission. As far as I know, no copyright law anywhere states that works are freely reproducible until explicitly forbidden.

Whatever moral side of the issue people take, this is an important issue for creators everywhere.
