    His was the only translation of The Odyssey I’ve read – that said, it was extremely readable.

    I’m sorry to hear this. I’m old enough to remember when Robert Fitzgerald’s translation of the Odyssey was the one to read — and I loved it for its muscularity, its vivid long lines, and the long afterword which convinced me that he knew the landscape and the cartography of the poem. When I eventually read Fagles, I was pretty impressed. He found his own long line, his own “take” on those Homeric similes. Later on, omeone gave me Ian McKellan’s recording of Fagles’ Odyssey and it was wonderful to play it on long drives — that voice, that poem.
