And hundreds of thousands of Robert Jordan fans will be extremely pleased. J.P. Rowling is among them, I expect, because the Harry Potter books owe a great deal in terms of pacing and story line to the Wheel of Time series.
My son, now 28, started reading the books when he was 13, or a little younger than the heroes: he was so taken with the first that he insisted I read them if I wanted “to know how to tell a good story.” Must say I did learn a few things, too. He and his posse have bought and read every one since: in effect, they grew up with the heroes. Without any advertising to speak of, a new book in the series made the NYT best seller list in days. Robert Jordan never seemed to get the respect he deserved during his life time, more’s the pity. Must have made a fair bit of money, though, which is at least a comfort.

He was my favourite Conan series author when I was a young teen. He brought a certain literary flair and command of language to it that I didn’t even know I was looking for then. I think I read the first WoT book when I was about 14, but can’t really remember. Lately, I’ve been gazing wistfully at the fantasy shelves again, wondering if there’s still a place for me there, but it seems to chock-a-block full of garbage I couldn’t spare the time to sift through it.
