Canada Reads, a reality show on CBC radio, is gearing back up for a long argument about …something… between astronauts, rock stars, actors, and (shock!) some literary folk. It’d be interesting to get some stats on how many people actually follow through and read the book once the radio sniping is done.
Canada Reads is the annual on-air book discussion in which a panel tries to pick a single book that all of Canada would enjoy reading.
Jian Ghomeshi, host of cultural affairs show Q, will host the 2008 contest, scheduled for Feb. 25-29.

Hey George, boys and girls, in a bit of shameless self-promotion click on the above blog
for my take. I like what I see.

That’s to say click on my name to go to the blog. Comments welcomed.

well, I’d listen to Jian Ghomeshi read the phone book, so, i’ll be tuning in. I’ve listened to this show before, and i do like it. Although, i suspect that most people who tune in are readers anyway, anything that makes people think about reading is a good thing, to me, anyway.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the CBC actually tried a show with Jian Ghomeshi reading the phone book. You can’t escape him; he’s everywhere on CBC Radio. It’s absolutely relentless. I used to think he was okay, but now it’s close to torture. Is the talent pool so tiny that the CBC has to use the same people ad nauseam? And wouldn’t it be better to have a host who knows something about books? Or is that suggestion just silly?

“[...] in which a panel tries to pick a single book that all of Canada would enjoy reading.”
The whole idea of the show is ridiculous: here you go, Canada – one single book that we think all 33 million of you would do well to read. See you next year!
Why instead don’t they make this a regular (weekly or monthly) program with alternating contributors so that it’s not simply a one-book-per-year gameshow? That is, if getting people to read good books (or read regularly, in general) is the point.

Matt, you just described “Talking Books”, with Ian Brown. Even better, it doesn’t try to turn literature into a competition.

This is how we treat and teach literature, though: as something we inoculate our population against. You get a series of painful shots against it in grade school, a couple more shots in high school, and god willing, you’ll never have to get another shot again. And you won’t have to worry about getting the bug. You’re vaccinated! Canada Reads is a booster for hypochondriacs.

In thought Bill Richardson hosted these. What happened?

i’m sorry that you don’t share my passion for Jian, Alex. Maybe its a girl thing. I’ve always found that i enjoy his opinions. But radio isnt always about knowing things, , the same way that tv isnt always about being particularly talented. Looks count on tv, sounds count on radio. and he sounds good. oh boy, does he sound good.
