Kindle and bloggers

Apparently Kindle will sell subscribers access to various blogs. What do the bloggers get out of this? Ed has several extensive reports on this and I’ll list them in order: one, two, three, four. I think even Ed would agree he can come off as crazy sometimes, but he’s damn thorough when he gets a bee in his bonnet.

I’m not a huge fan of the Kindle, but this seems to me to be a case of people misunderstanding the device completely. Where are all the bloggers up in arms that my cell phone provider charges me four cents a page to read their blog on my cell phone’s browser? It’s exactly the same deal. Amazon doesn’t charge anything for the EVDO access, soaking up the cost because they’re assuming that it’s being used to buy Amazon products. However, for any outside content, whether it be accessing blogs or transmitting your own files to the device, they charge you a fee for your use of the cellular wireless. They’re charging monthly instead of per page, but still, it’s the same deal. Presumably the blogs they’re including for free are because they think they add enough value to the Kindle platform that it’s worth soaking up the costs.

On the other hand, if you can find a bunch of bloggers who are up in arms that my cell phone provider charges me to view their page, I’d be amused and concede a point of some sort. *shrug*

But then I’d ask if bloggers are up in arms that my ISP charges me for my internet connection and they don’t get a cut of that either.

Isn’t it that the material is downloaded and saved rather than accessed by a live web connection?
