Nan Talese says the only person involved in the Frey scandal who owes an apology is Oprah, for stoning Frey in public on her show.
…
…
Um…
…
(I suspect Nan Talese has mister Frey confused with the little people who live in her briefcase — the ones with spiral pupils in their eyes, and those fancy red hats, who dance and sing on rainbows and shit gumdrops…)
…
…
Now. People. You know how I feel about Orpah. I think she’s an overbearing ego- and money making- machine with no redeeming value. But. Come. On. This just can’t be right. She must have been misquoted. I agree Oprah was engaged in foul-mannered ass-covering, but…

Actually, I agree with Nan.

i do too, more or less. at least, oprah created a media monster & then went into sloppy, hysterical damage control mode when the media buzz went nasty. but it was far from unpredictable: cf. bakhtin, mcluhan, baudrillard. it was oprah who turned an obscure, hack-ish author into an icon, but not, typically, she who payed when the audience discovered the less than iconic human behind the myth of opra brand authenticity, she threw him to the mob. of course, they both made a truly obscene amount of money promoting the book as the new face of ‘authenticity.’

forgive the run-on-ish quality of the above post: my browser won’t let me see the far right side of the comment box, so it’s easy to lose track of clauses, thoughts, etc.

I agree with her. I sounds like Oprah basically picked up on the ill-informed outrage of her readers and milked it for her own publicity. Worse, she did it in a pretty sneaky way.

I can’t believe people are still talking about this. As far as I’m concerned every person involved in the making and marketing of that book – from the teacher who taught Frey the alphabet to, yes, Oprah herself- should be ashamed of themselves. I happened to buy it for someone because it was on their Christmas list, and as I usually do during the festive season of book giving, set about to reading it before wrapping it. I don’t believe I’ve ever before been confronted with such eye ball gouging inducing agony in the form of the written word. I lasted 30 pages. I wrapped it quickly and tried not to feel guilty for giving something so poorly written as a “gift”.
Fact or fiction? Who cares? That sort of thing should be an indictable offence. I mean, trees died, man, poor innocent trees…
I think we’re all owed way more than an apology, from everyone involved in that scheme
