The Writers’ Union of Canada exerts is massive influence and releases the full extent of its power as a “union” with a strongly-worded statement condemning the Supreme Court’s decision against Little Sisters.
I’m sure they’re voting on a strike motion, even as I type. Supreme Court and Stephen Harper quail. If we’re lucky, they may think to tack on a rider increasing our job security and the value of our pension plan, while negotiating our next contract with the Canadian people. It’d be a welcome addition to the newsletters and social opportunities. (Thanks, F)

The Writers Union welcomes censorship and promotes it; ie
Go to google, enter ‘ Banff Sept 13 2006 Rumsfeld, Day, Harper, Rice ‘.
This is the 30 agreement signed by a Canadian Prime Minister, American Presiden and Mexican President to unify Mexico, Canada and the USA by 2010. It’s called the NOrth American Union. I guarantee you that not one magazine getting an Ontario Arts Grant or Canada Council Grant has anything to say about it. Ontario and Canada grants for writers are all about rewards for silence. It will be funny when the Canadian Writers union gets all its mandate from Washington, as if it doesn’t now. Thanks for nothing members of the Canadian Grant takers Union – you’ve failed your country and set a lousy example of causes. Diefenbaker did more against censorship and for way less money when he rented an office across the street from Parliament and sold The Happy Hooker.

I get cranky like that because the signed agreements on the North American Union is the biggest story in this country since Confederation. It makes the Writers Union look like the grubby little mouthpieces they’ve become. Ah well, screw the truth lets all search for beauty. I gotta get a better disposition.
January 25th, 2007 at 8:18 am
No, tell us more, Mr Fifty. To tell the shameful truth I know nothing about what you now speak of.
January 25th, 2007 at 9:29 am
Alright Mr. Anon. This is my understanding. The story of the disintegration of Canada is at least as big as the Confederation of Canada. The story is headline news in Mexico. It is a legal signed series of agreements to integrate our education, medical, history, law, police and military by 2010. It’s a deal that has been signed by Paul Martin, Bush, Harper, Day, Rice, Rumsfeld and a host of others. The last meeting was held in Banff Alberta Sept 12,13 and 14. Harper gave the keynote speech. Grants for artists you can be assured will not be decided by the traditional bunch after that date. That the highest executives in the land have signed and cosigned this agreement again and again is fascinating. No it’s not a conspiracy – you can read all about it on Mark Petigrews’ government web site. You could also google it, the references are
many. Part of my point is that as big and huge as this is the artistic community of Canada is severely failing at discussing the ramifications of this. That we give Canadian writers and their print publication industry cash is awful if they can’t even approach such a massive national story on any level at all except to ignore it or treat it with silence. It isn’t polite, refined or cultured to ignore such a huge story. We are being failed by our artists. You know if you piss off a dishwasher at least he has the integrity to quit or tell the boss to screw off. Does this mean the average Canadian artists has less moral courage than a disastisfied blue collar worker or does it mean they genuinely don’t know or really don’t think it’s relevant. If they don’t think it’s relevant than I cry, “Intellectual Frauds.” Below are some of the ten thousand web sites devoted to a discussion of this.

Personally I think if Gordon Sinclair could be brought back he would walk into the Writers’ Union office, haul everyone out into the alley and chain whip the bunch of them screaming, “We give you money for promoting Canadian Culture and its future not to act like Harpers’ bum boys.”
January 25th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
My favourite pot head, Pierre Berton would be a little more discrete perhaps but in the end I think he would toss a few punches too.

Calling people ‘bum boys’ as an insult goes a long way to contextualizing your comments on other posts here.
January 25th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
It’s an adequate phrase that’s been used for a long time. It pertains. It doesn’t contextualize anything. I’m not politically correct. I’ve hung around with gays from San Diego to Toronto to know how much the phrase is used. I’ve published the Halo newsletter back in the 80’s. I’ve published another gay rag as well out of Tornoto in 1978. I know where my friends are.

But honestly Fish Fish do you have concerns about the North American Union? Can you see how it might touch us all? Can you see how the Little Sister customs’ thing becomes a moot point after 2010?
January 26th, 2007 at 7:08 am
I published one issue of The Body Politic Mr. Fish. You? But anyway please don’t leave me with that typical feeling that when I bring up the topic of the North American Union you act like the coward that most artists and journalists are in this country and change the subject. Not withstanding that I changed the subject from Little Sisters gay porn case to the absolute direct heart of Canadian Culture. Did you google the Banff Sept. 13. 2006 meeting between Rumsfeld and that Bush licker Harper? Don’t be surprised if Betty Kennedys’ ghost rearranges your closet tonight.
January 26th, 2007 at 7:29 am
I must sound like quite the crank Mr. Fish. But my point of digression is that that I’ve earned the right to use the phrase ‘bum boys’ and I still practice freedom of speech. I don’t accept that because I used a phrase you object to that you can toss out all my other statements. Yarbles – show some. As for knocking grants and grant takers, it ain’t out of jealousy – I got enough money. But I only gots one country, Mr. Fish and it’s gone in three years.
January 26th, 2007 at 1:46 pm
I guess between Little Sisters and The Prince of Pot we can expect the Americans to come charging up here with their Ray Guns mounted on Hummers. Too much sex and drugs in this country. Can of Christ, look what it did to our ‘intellectuals’. They think eating a chocolate cake in the dark is proactive. They reward work that can’t sell with welfare grants. Ahh, gotta love the growing disconnect. Durkheim would be proud.

Canadian Grants for artists – now that’s snowblindness.
