Re: Steffler taking the high road
I know that John’s heart’s in the right place, but this is not a very good reason for cancelling the programme. Noble, but ill-conceived. If a copyright holder doesn’t want to have their work republished for nothing … they don’t have to! And if no one’s making a dollar on the back of these poor downtrodden poets, which no one–the laureate aside, I suppose, but the $12K/annum he’s raking in is hardly larcenous–is, then what harm is being done? Personally, it’s always a pleasant surprise when I get money for a poem, and I only demand payment for publication when that’s what was agreed to beforehand. Were Bowering and Michel telling poets they were going to be paid, then stiffing them? I kinda doubt it. The biggest problem with the programme in their hands wasn’t lack of payment, it was that they promoted a lot of boring poems.
