Backwards City links to an article at Wired in which famous sf and horror types, including a few literary practitioners, write six word short stories. Yes, six.
Failed SAT. Lost scholarship. Invented rocket.
- William ShatnerComputer, did we bring batteries? Computer?
- Eileen GunnVacuum collision. Orbits diverge. Farewell, love.
- David BrinGown removed carelessly. Head, less so.
- Joss WhedonAutomobile warranty expires. So does engine.
- Stan LeeMachine. Unexpectedly, I’d invented a time
- Alan MooreLonged for him. Got him. Shit.
- Margaret Atwood
Absolutely wicked idea. David Brin has either got a lot of time on his hands or is procrastinating on a new book.

These are great! But the Atwood short short is definitely a novel.

Harumph! You’d think Wired would have had the decency to give a least a tiny shout-out to BlackBook (http://www.blackbookmag.com), which already ran a 6-word story piece back in 2004 which included contributions from Irvine Welsh, Robert Olen Butler, Norman Mailer, David Lodge and others.

Like Pete, I instantly thought of BlackBook’s issue. This just feels like the same thing but with worse authors and thus worse resaults (most of these hardly qualify as “stories” and don’t really evoke anything. Most are just punlines or b-movie tag lines)
A few like Atwood’s are pretty good though.
Still, a great idea (of Hemingway’s at least)

Oh Alan Moore, how you do what you do!

I love these six word stories because every one is brief, but they are good for sparking lots of ideas. I like that each story is short like a title, but they imply so much more than most titles. My favorite is, “Failed SAT. Lost scholarship. Invented rocket.” by William Shatner. I think this story speaks to me for several reasons. I’m a senior in high school who is very involved with all the pains of applying for college. I just took the SATs for the second time two weeks ago, so this story really hits home for me. It’s inspiring, and it makes me optimistic about my future.

I really enjoy these. then i like one that Orson Scott Card did: “The baby’s blood type? Human, mostly.”
then my brother wrote:
Madam
they fought bravely
-The President
6 word stories are awesome.
(ignore all spelling and grammar mistakes.)
