Canadian author David Bernans won’t get a room booking at Concordia for this reading from North of 9/11. But that’s not going to stop him.
n July, the author of North of 9/11 was refused a room-booking request for the reading scheduled for Sept. 11 by Concordia’s risk assessment committee. The request had initially been approved, but was revoked four days later.
The committee gave no explanation for its decision.
However, publisher Cumulus Press said the reading was blocked as a security risk.
Bernans said he will go ahead with a reading from North of 9/11 on Sept. 11 at the Concordia Community Solidarity Co-op Bookstore.
North of 9/11 is a work of fiction focusing on political activism at Concordia, including a Palestinian solidarity group, after the Sept. 11 attacks in the U.S.

Years ago, when I was a university student, I read news stories like this all the time. However, the stories dated from the 1970s and 1980s, and they came from the countries of the Warsaw Pact.
Let’s see now . . . Concordia University’s “risk assessment committee” refused to let Mr. Bernans read from his work of fiction. “The committee gave no explanation for its decision.”
Cumulus Press, the author’s publisher, said “the reading was blocked as a security risk.”
The university “has not replied” to the author’s written request for an explanation.
Mr. Bernans added that committee’s “membership is secret, and it really appears to be accountable to nobody except itself.”
Well done, Concordia! Bulgarian commissars couldn’t have done better. Free speech takes another hit in a Canadian university.
