I think it’s safe to say (or perhaps not), as Bookslut’s Michael Schaub did, that Joyce is a complete dickhead. Stephen Joyce that is. He’s been fucking with Joyce scholars for years, behaving like a money-grubbing, attention-seeking baby. My friend Michael Groden, a Joyce scholar at UWO, has been banging his head against the estate wall for years and now gets some press about it in the New Yorker. Others are joining in the battle. In possibly related news, Steinbeck’s blood heirs gain rights to some of his work. Time for a picnic! Between the Joyce, Steinbeck and Hemigway families, there’s one really dysfunctional literary family gathering out there.
